A single-gas sniffer, the MSA ALTAIR Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas detector, is a reliable, 2-year minimum device. The length of time remaining for the device life is displayed on the screen at all times. The low-maintenance, rugged ALTAIR H2S detector is designed for air analysis of H2S concentrations and will alert you to dangerous conditions when working on sites like petrochemical and natural gas production facilities where monitoring is required.

For a single gas monitor with constant readout of gas levels, consider the Draeger Pac 3500 H2S Detector.

Key Features:
  • Sensor range of 0-100 ppm
  • Resolution of 1ppm
  • Alarm set point: Low-10 ppm and High-15 ppm
  • Durable - Hardy rubberized armor protects the unit from falls and knocks on the work site, while Radio Frequency protection is built into the unit.
  • Long-Lasting - The high-power battery provides over two years continuous gas monitoring.
  • There are no start up times for the unit, which you might find on other sensors when they are turned off and on.
  • The sensor is a patented solid-state device that serves to make the ALTAIR incredibly light (weighing only 4oz).
  • Low Maintenance - Calibrated and sealed at the factory the unit has complete IP67 protection, preventing dust, dirt or water ingress, giving the unit a long maintenance-free life span.
  • Certificate of Calibration - Included with each ALTAIR is a signed certificate of calibration.
  • Triple Alarm - Three alert modes are included: visual, vibration and sonic alerts to make you aware of danger in any working environment.
  • Built-in Testing Adaptor - The built-in gas delivery adapter facilitates calibration and bump testing, and means there are no small accessories to lose.
  • Easy to Read - A large LCD screen; this is backlit for convenience when working in dark spaces.
  • Single-Button Interface - Designed to be easy to use, the ALTAIR single gas detector features a one-button design that let’s you access the majority of the unit’s options.
  • Data Logging - Data logging comes as standard with this gas detector, recording the last 25 alarm events as well as peak sensor readings. This can all be easily accessed with the Link software, and downloaded onto a PC with the optional IR Receiver.
Whatever your work site, the MSA ALTAIR single-gas detector is great for a range of applications - maritime work with tugboats and tankers, petrochemical industries such as oil rigs or refineries, chemical synthesis, tank maintenance, wastewater management and sewer access - to name a few. Gas detectors such as this are crucial to meeting OSHA standards and keeping your work site safe.

Consider purchasing this item with an IR Reader to interface with the internal controls and data logging information.

Will this detect a propane gas leak?

The MSA ALTAIR Single-Gas H2S Detector is designed to detect hydrogen sulfide.

For non-commercial propane detection (for example a home application), the BOLO Combustible Gas Leak Detector 500A1200A is an excellent choice.

Does the software and cable come with the monitor in order to download the readings onto a PC?

In order to download the datalogging information from the Altair, a Jeteye Infrared Reader (part #10082834) must be purchased separately. <br>
      <br>
The required software can be downloaded for free from www.msasafety.com.

How do you turn it off?

The MSA Altair Single Gas Monitor does not turn off once it has been activated. It will continuously be sampling the air for its entire two year life span. The time remaining for the monitor will be displayed on the screen.

I've got a sealed box with MSA Altair H2S Gas Detector, on a seal is written "Activate By: DEC14" now is already January 2015. Can I still use the gas detector if I activated it later then its suggested date?

The MSA Altair single gas monitors leave the factory with a sticker indicating that you have 1 year to turn the unit on. Then a 2 year run-time after that. If you go past the initial 1 year period, the unit will still work. Once activated, it will have the usual 2 year countdown. Having waited, it is possible that the battery might run down before the 2 years are up. That said, battery life is quite dependent on how often the alarms go off, as this drains the battery. If the battery were to run out near the end, outside the 3 year (1+2) ‘life’ of the unit, MSA would likely not cover that under warranty.

Is the clip that comes on the back of the MSA Altair H2S Monitor sold separately? If so, where can I get them. We have broken clips with good monitors that need to be replaced.

The clips for the MSA Altair H2S Monitor (Model #: 10092521) can indeed be purchased separately. There are two different types of clip for this monitor:<br><br>

MSA Clip, Suspender Clip (standard) – Part#: 10040002 – This is the standard clip that comes with the gas all MSA Altair model gas monitors.<br><br>

MSA Stainless Steel Clip, Suspender Clip – Part #: 10069894 – This is the slightly upgraded version of the standard clip, but is made from stainless steel. <br><br>

      We sell both versions.

How can I access the data log to determine exposure?

    1 answer
    1. Chris

      2015-04-15 21:43:41

The MSA Altair single gas monitors store event log information. Some of this can be accessed from the instrument directly. For a more complete download of available date, an infra-red (IR) reader is available, and software to use with your PC is a free download. Please see the instruction manual available at the bottom of this page.

I am looking for a portable detector for H2. This will be used for de-gassing H2 cooled generators. We have analyzers in place to track the purity of the vent stream. what I am looking for is detecting and quantifing a leak without co bleed over and LEL being influenced by low O2 levels. I am in hopes of finding a meter that will show both LEL AND % H2.

We do have instruments that can be used in situations such as you are describing. The most applicable would be the RKI Eagle. These are quite flexible, and the manufacturer is well accustomed to making custom configurations.
